Italy deploys forces to support US‑Israel operations against Iran

Italy has sent roughly 400 Air Force members, 300 Army personnel, Eurofighter jets and surveillance aircraft to the Persian Gulf to back U.S. and Israeli air strikes on Iran. The deployment was revealed after NATO Secretary‑General Jens Stoltenberg’s remarks and has been criticised as illegal, lacking parliamentary approval and contrary to Italy’s constitutional pacifist clause.

A coalition of unions, NGOs and political groups has called for a large protest on 11 April outside the Sigonella air base, demanding the government halt the use of the base and other Sicilian facilities for what they describe as an unlawful war effort.
