Italy deploys military and police amid widespread protests

Italy has implemented heavy security measures across several major cities, including Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Padova, Bari, and Genova, following a wave of demonstrations. Protesters are expressing dissatisfaction with rising living costs, fuel prices, and government military spending, with some groups also chanting against NATO.

In Milan, the government deployed 500 soldiers to bolster approximately 5,000 police officers. Authorities are utilizing drone surveillance, rapid response units, and increased railway station controls to prevent disorder. In response to previous looting and vandalism, many luxury boutiques have boarded up their storefronts.

Clashes occurred in Rome and Turin, where police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds after demonstrators attempted to deviate from approved routes. In Rome, protesters also gathered near the Colosseum. Authorities reported that 371 people were detained, including 110 minors and 69 foreign nationals.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has introduced a new security decree. This legislation imposes stricter penalties for violence during demonstrations, including prison sentences of two to five years for organized violence. The decree also allows for fines to be imposed on parents of minors who cause damage during protests.
