Italy develops VBM 155 SPH wheeled self-propelled howitzer
Italy is developing a new generation of heavy wheeled artillery known as the VBM 155 SPH (Self Propelled Howitzer). The project is a collaboration between Leonardo and Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) through the Consorzio Iveco-Oto Melara.
First showcased as a scale model at Eurosatory 2026 in Paris, the system combines a 10x10 armored vehicle chassis from the VBM NG family with Leonardo’s HITFIRE 155 unmanned turret. The turret is designed for fully automated loading and firing processes, requiring no personnel inside the turret itself. The system features a 155mm/52-caliber gun and is capable of reaching targets up to 70 km away.
The development aims to address the ‘shoot and scoot’ tactical necessity highlighted by modern conflicts, where rapid repositioning is required to avoid detection by drones and reconnaissance systems. Industry targets include conducting the first firing trials by the end of 2026, followed by qualification tests throughout 2026 and 2027.
