Italy disputes proposed EU budget cuts for 2028-2034
The European Union is facing significant internal tension regarding the development of the 2028-2034 multiannual budget. A central conflict has emerged between Northern European nations, which advocate for austerity and spending cuts, and Mediterranean countries, such as Italy, which seek to maintain redistributive solidarity and investment levels.
Following a proposal from the Irish presidency to cut 141 billion euros compared to the European Commission's initial outline, Italian officials have voiced strong opposition. Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida protested a proposed 2 billion euro reduction in the agricultural emergency fund. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that while Italy seeks to fund new priorities like competitiveness, resources cannot be found by cutting cohesion and agricultural policies, which she described as preconditions for strategic autonomy.
Financial data highlights Italy's position as a net contributor to the EU. Between 2000 and 2025, the negative balance between Italy's contributions and the funds received is approximately 84 billion euros in current terms. When including duties and administrative expenses, the total deficit reaches approximately 114 billion euros in nominal terms.
