Italy reaches 77% recycling rate for packaging in 2025, Conai reports

The National Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Packaging (Conai) disclosed that in 2025 Italy recycled 10.97 million tonnes of packaging, representing 77.3 % of the 14.2 million tonnes placed on the market. The report highlighted high recovery rates for steel (82.2 %), aluminum (69.5 %), paper and cardboard (92.6 %), wood (69.7 %), glass (over 82 %) and plastics (50.5 %). Combined with energy recovery, the share of packaging diverted from landfill reached 86.6 %.

Vannia Gava, vice‑minister for the environment and energy security, called the result a “major milestone” for Italy’s circular‑economy model, while Conai president Ignazio Capuano cautioned that the figure is a starting point, urging firms to design for reuse and recyclability and to increase the use of secondary raw materials.

Conai noted that more than 7,500 municipalities, covering 98 % of the population, have signed agreements with the consortium, and the agency provided €892 million in support to local authorities for differentiated packaging collection in 2025.
