Italy divided over proposed limits on foreign students in schools

A political debate has emerged in Italy regarding the presence of foreign students in classrooms. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has proposed a decree to limit the number of non-Italian speaking students in classes, aiming to prevent the formation of “ghetto” classrooms.

President Sergio Mattarella has countered this stance, advocating for schools to remain open to everyone to promote social cohesion. Citing Article 34 of the Constitution, Mattarella emphasized that education should serve as a tool for integration, helping to build trust and prevent social fragmentation rather than creating barriers.

The disagreement has sparked significant political friction, with various figures debating whether the government's approach aligns with constitutional principles or if the President's stance is an attempt to promote inclusion over exclusion.
