Italy economic analysis highlights wage gaps and fiscal context

Analysis of the Italian economy suggests that the nation's fiscal situation is often misrepresented in public discourse. While Italy has exceeded the European Union's 3% deficit-to-GDP limit in 53.8% of the years since 2000, other nations such as France (76.9%), Poland (86.4%), and Greece have also frequently surpassed this threshold.

Beyond public debt, experts emphasize the importance of private debt, which stands at approximately 92% of GDP in Italy. This figure is significantly lower than in countries like France (141%) or the Netherlands (202.5%), yet remains a critical factor for economic stability regarding interest rates and banking resilience.

Economist Carlo Cottarelli notes that while Italy is experiencing slow growth of around 1%, the benefits are not distributed equally. Wage growth has lagged behind inflation from 2021 and 2022, leaving many employees with purchasing power approximately 8% lower than five years ago. While corporate profits and self-employed workers have fared better, salaried employees continue to struggle with the loss of spending capacity.
