Italy Education Minister defends teacher pay on World Teachers' Day
On World Teachers' Day, Italian Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara addressed criticisms regarding teacher salaries. Responding to opposition claims that recent pay increases fail to offset inflation, Valditara noted that previous center-left governments had implemented long-term contractual freezes. He highlighted that the current administration has provided salary increases and expanded state-funded benefits, including health and accident insurance for teachers and administrative staff.
Separately, the labor union UGL Istruzione emphasized the essential social role of educators in fostering civic responsibility and democracy. The union called for concrete investments and improved economic recognition for teachers, arguing that the profession's importance to society must be matched by practical support and better working conditions to reduce social inequalities.
