Italy Education Ministry allocates funds for school staff amid regional disputes

Italian Minister of Education and Merit Giuseppe Valditarah has signed a decree allocating an additional 19 million euros to Regional School Offices. These funds are intended for the temporary assignment of administrative, technical, and auxiliary (ATA) staff for the 2026/2027 school year to support the school network dimensioning process.

However, the decision has faced backlash. Education ministers from Sardinia, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, and Umbria have denounced the move as a “retaliation” against regions that did not independently proceed with school dimensioning. They argue that while schools have been reorganized through government-imposed commissariats, they are now being deprived of the resources necessary to manage the consequences of that reorganization.

Separately, regarding teaching staff (GPS), the assignment process for the 2026/2027 school year remains ongoing. While initial rounds of appointments have occurred, many teachers are still awaiting new bulletins. Further assignments may be possible if positions become available due to resignations, failure to take up service, or appointment rectifications, though no national calendar for additional rounds has been established.
