Italy electoral law faces 30 legal appeals over constitutionality

A massive legal challenge is being launched against Italy’s new electoral law. The Rete del voto libero e uguale, a coalition of civil society members, lawyers, and opposition politicians, plans to file 30 separate legal appeals across 29 judicial districts on October 26, the same day the law is set to take effect.

The appeals, supported by 99 lawyers and 500 signatories, target six specific constitutional concerns: the majority prize mechanism, the autonomy of the two Chambers, the national calculation of the Senate prize, voting freedom and candidate selection, gender parity measures, and the mandatory indication of a Prime Minister candidate. The group aims to bring these issues before the Constitutional Court before the 2027 elections.

Politically, the landscape remains fractured. While the right-wing coalition focuses on the electoral reform, the left-wing opposition faces internal debates regarding primary elections and candidate selection. Meanwhile, economic discussions continue as the government negotiates budget measures with the European Commission.
