Italy electricity demand hits record high amid extreme heat
Italy is experiencing record-breaking electricity demand driven by extreme summer heat. According to Terna, electricity consumption in August reached 28.9 TWh, a 16.5% increase compared to August 2025. This surge is attributed to exceptionally high temperatures, with nighttime averages being 5°C higher than the previous year, necessitating increased use of cooling systems.
Renewable energy sources covered 41.4% of the national electricity demand in August, totaling 12 TWh. Solar power (photovoltaic) saw a significant 20.4% increase, reaching 6.2 TWh, while other sources like wind and hydroelectric power saw declines. Industrial energy consumption also rose by 1.1% in August.
Simultaneously, Italy is facing rising inflation, which reached 3.3% in August, the highest level in nearly three years. This increase is largely driven by energy costs, with regulated energy prices rising by 18.6% and non-regulated prices, such as fuels, increasing by 17.0%. The Unione Nazionale Consumatori estimates that these rising utility and transport costs significantly impact household budgets, with a family of four facing an estimated annual increase of 1,199 euros.
