Missing ultralight aircraft search intensifies in Calabria
Search operations are ongoing for a Tecnam P2008 ultralight aircraft that disappeared during a flight from Capo d’Orlando, Sicily, to Sibari, Calabria. The aircraft, which departed around 9:30 AM on August 16, was carrying two occupants: 64-year-old pilot and lawyer Carlo Arnulfo and 55-year-old passenger and lawyer Angela Buccico.
Rescue efforts are being coordinated by the Cosenza Prefecture and involve the Vigili del Fuoco, Aeronautica Militare, Carabinieri, and specialized drone operators. While initial searches included the coastline, recent cell phone signal triangulation using IMSI Catcher technology has shifted the focus toward the mountainous hinterland, specifically the area between Fuscaldo and Falconara Albanese.
Rescuers believe it is unlikely the aircraft impacted the sea, as the flight path would have been visible to numerous beachgoers. The search area is characterized by difficult terrain and dense vegetation. The last known trace of the occupants was a photograph of Stromboli sent by Buccico at 10:24 AM.
