Italy tourism and employment sectors show strong growth in 2026

Italy's tourism and labor markets are experiencing significant growth heading into the final quarter of 2026. In the tourism sector, the country has seen record-breaking performance, with 523.7 million visits recorded in the first nine months of the year, a 4.7% increase compared to 2025. Major destinations like Sorrento have surpassed 3 million annual visitors, while the TTG Travel Experience in Rimini highlighted a growing international presence in the hospitality market.

Employment data from the Excelsior monitoring system indicates a robust demand for labor. Italian companies project over 539,000 new hires for October, a 3.7% increase year-on-year. The hospitality, catering, and tourism services sector is a primary driver, accounting for approximately 94,500 planned entries. Regional highlights include Friuli Venezia Giulia, which expects 10,580 hires in October, and Irpinia and Sannio, where tourism demand is driving local job growth.

Despite this expansion, labor shortages remain a challenge. Approximately 44% of companies report difficulties in finding suitable candidates, particularly for specialized technical roles, managers, and executives. Additionally, the hospitality market is seeing a shift toward increased international brand penetration, with chain-owned hotels expected to reach 25% of the national market by 2030.
