Italy faces record heat wave as red alerts sweep nation
Mid‑July 2026 sees Italy engulfed by an intense heat wave. Temperatures soar above 40 °C in southern regions, reaching up to 44 °C in Sardinia and 45 °C in interior Sicily. The Ministry of Health has raised the heat‑alert level to “bollino rosso” for 15 cities, adding Bologna, Frosinone and Rome to the list that already included Brescia, Firenze, Perugia and Torino. Five more cities are on orange alert and several remain on yellow, while no green zones remain.
The northern Alps and pre‑Alps are expected to experience violent thunderstorms, hail and strong wind gusts as the hot, humid air collides with cooler mountain breezes, especially over the Triveneto and Padana plain. Local forecasts warn of 36 °C in Cefalù, 34‑37 °C in Bitonto, and temporary storms with possible hail over Legnano. Health services in Bologna and surrounding municipalities have activated emergency hot‑weather protocols, including hotlines and home‑care checks for vulnerable residents.
A recent international study published in Nature Health links extreme heat to a rise in psychiatric hospitalisations, noting a 3.3 % increase on the day of exposure and 5.6 % over the following nine days, with the elderly most at risk. The study underscores the broader public‑health strain from the ongoing European heat wave, which has already been associated with thousands of excess deaths across the continent.
