Italy faces record electricity demand and rising energy costs

Italy is facing a significant surge in energy and fuel costs. According to Terna, electricity demand reached a record monthly high of 32.5 TWh in July 2026, driven by extreme summer temperatures. The annual peak power demand also hit approximately 58 GW on July 15. Despite the high demand, renewable sources, led by solar power, covered 41.5% of the total electricity requirement.

Simultaneously, motorists are experiencing sharp increases in fuel prices. Assoutenti reports that diesel prices have risen by 27.6% compared to August 2025, while gasoline has increased by nearly 17%. These hikes are attributed to international tensions, particularly in the Middle East.

Looking ahead to September, Nomisma Energia warns of a major impact on household and business budgets. Estimates suggest that annual costs for a typical family could rise by 876.8 euros when accounting for electricity, gas, and fuel. Businesses are expected to see a 54% increase in annual energy expenses. These rising costs are linked to increased wholesale prices for gas and electricity.
