Italy energy security and nuclear role discussed at Brindisi summit

The second edition of ‘I Colori dell’Energia’ in Brindisi focuses on Italy’s energy transition, emphasizing national security, supply stability, and industrial competitiveness. A central report highlights Italy’s significant vulnerability to energy shocks, noting that in 2024, net imports covered 73.9% of Italy’s gross available energy, compared to a European Union average of 57.3%.

The report discusses the potential role of new nuclear energy as a low-emission, programmable source, though it cautions against premature investment decisions. It stresses that factors such as costs, implementation timelines, waste management, and safety must be rigorously evaluated. Furthermore, the report notes geopolitical risks in the nuclear supply chain, citing International Energy Agency data that Russia controls approximately 40% of global uranium enrichment capacity.

To improve competitiveness, the transition must address high electricity costs, which for certain non-domestic users in late 2025 were approximately 20% higher than the EU average. Beyond power generation, the report identifies opportunities for Italian industry to develop expertise in engineering, advanced materials, automation, and maintenance services within the broader energy supply chain.
