Italy Enforces Fines for Smartphone Mounts on Motorbike Handlebars

Italian traffic regulations (Codice della Strada) specify several offences when a smartphone is mounted on the handlebars of motorcycles, scooters or bicycles. Violations include manual interaction with the screen (Art. 173), obstruction of the primary visual field (Art. 169), covering vehicle instruments (Art. 141), blocking rear‑view mirrors (Art. 72) and the support detaching while riding (Art. 161).

Penalties range from €42 to €1,400, include the deduction of 1 to 10 licence points and may entail a suspension of the driving licence for 15 days up to three months, with higher fines for repeat offences within two years.
