Italy fuel prices rise as diesel tax relief expires

Fuel prices in Italy are rising following the expiration of a 6.1 cent per liter diesel excise tax discount on October 5. Major energy companies, including Eni, have responded by adjusting price caps; Eni increased its diesel ceiling to 2.25 euros per liter. Other operators like IP and Q8 have also implemented price adjustments.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has indicated that the government is prepared to intervene using a ‘mobile excise’ mechanism. This system would use excess VAT revenue generated from higher fuel prices to fund future tax cuts, thereby avoiding additional strain on the public budget. Approximately 160 million euros have been secured for potential stabilization efforts.

However, the implementation of this mechanism has faced delays, as the required interministerial decree has not yet been issued. Consumer advocacy groups, such as Codacons, have criticized the government for failing to fulfill its promises regarding timely tax relief. Additionally, logistical challenges have led to localized fuel shortages in peripheral areas like the Gulf of Policastro.
