Italy expands automatic Free-Flow highway toll system

Italy is expanding its automatic Free-Flow toll system on several highway sections in Northern Italy. This system replaces traditional toll booths with cameras that automatically capture vehicle license plates to facilitate smoother traffic flow and reduce emissions caused by braking and accelerating.

Currently, the system covers approximately 200 kilometers of the country's 6,000-kilometer toll network. Specific sections include the A33 Autostrada delle Langhe, the A59 Tangenziale di Como, the A60 Tangenziale di Varese, and the Ospitaletto–Montichiari connection. While the A36 Pedemontana Lombarda has utilized this technology since 2015, the current expansion modernizes and extends the service to more commuter and travel routes.

Drivers using automatic toll boxes, such as Telepass, will have payments processed automatically. However, motorists without a box must manually settle the fee online, via app, or at a payment point within 15 days of passage. Failure to meet this deadline can result in a payment request with a surcharge, and continued non-compliance may lead to fines ranging between 87 and 344 euros.
