Italy expands biomethane network with new plant connections

Italy is expanding its renewable gas infrastructure through new biomethane connections in the central and southern regions.

In Caivano, Italgas has connected an Edison biomethane plant to its distribution network. The facility produces green gas from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and is expected to supply up to 4 million cubic meters of biomethane annually, enough to meet the average consumption of approximately 11,000 families. This marks the 18th biomethane connection for Italgas, as the company aims to reach 50 connections within the year.

In Cortona, Centria, a distribution company within the Estra Group, has also activated a new connection for a biomethane plant. This facility utilizes agricultural waste to produce up to 3.5 million Smc of renewable gas per year. The project involved extending the medium-pressure network by over 1.4 kilometers and implementing a digital remote management system to monitor gas injection in real time.
