Italy Expands Compost Use with Free Distribution in Asti and Nationwide Recycling Agreement

GAIA announced that, beginning in July, it will distribute free high‑quality compost from its anaerobic digestion and composting plant in San Damiano d'Asti. The offer is open to residents, farms, public entities and any visitors to the facility, with the aim of improving soil fertility, water retention and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) signed an agreement with key stakeholders—including CONAI, the Italian Compostors Consortium, Biorepack, Coldiretti, Confagricoltura and CIA – Agricoltori Italiani—to create a national compost chain. The pact seeks to raise compost quality and traceability, promote its use in agriculture, public green spaces and in public procurement that follows Minimum Environmental Criteria, and to strengthen the circular‑economy model across Italy.
