Italy expands design exports to Malta amid domestic energy and judicial debates
Italy is expanding its economic and political presence in the Mediterranean through design exports and domestic policy discussions. In Malta, the Italian Design Day 2026 is set to showcase furniture, lighting, and fine jewelry at the DesignMT trade show. Recent data indicates a surge in Italian exports to Malta, with residential furniture reaching €47.93 million in 2025 and kitchen systems growing to €21.50 million.
In Italy, Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso addressed energy concerns, stating the government is prepared to intervene regarding fuel prices and potential diesel export blocks from the United States. Urso emphasized the need to increase domestic refinery production and accelerate bio-refinery projects to ensure strategic autonomy.
Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani commented on judicial matters, calling for magistrates to ensure that those arrested in flagrante delicto do not appear to act with impunity. Tajani argued that releasing suspects immediately after arrest can create social alarm and demotivate law enforcement, while the National Association of Magistrates (ANM) characterized his remarks as contrary to the rule of law.
