Italy expands diesel Euro‑5 restrictions in northern cities starting Oct 2026

From 1 October 2026, Italian regions in the north will tighten traffic rules for diesel cars that meet the Euro‑5 emissions standard or lower. The measures apply to city areas in Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia‑Romagna with populations over 100 000, covering municipalities such as Milan, Brescia, Monza, Bergamo, Venice, Verona, Padua, Bologna and others. During weekdays the bans operate between 08:30 and 18:30, with a seasonal window that runs until 30 April in some zones.

The restrictions target personal and light‑commercial vehicles; heavier categories are expected to follow later. Piedmont will not implement a structural ban but will use alternative air‑quality measures. Violations can attract fines of €168‑€679 and may lead to a driver’s licence suspension for 15‑30 days.
