Italy expands electronic Free‑Flow toll system on key highways

Italy is extending its Free‑Flow toll system, which removes physical toll booths and charges vehicles automatically through cameras and sensors. Drivers equipped with Telepass, UnipolMove or MooneyGo are billed without stopping, while others must register on an app or visit authorized payment points within 15 days. Failure to pay can lead to a fine of up to €344 and the loss of two driving‑license points.

The technology is currently operating on less than 200 km of the national network, covering the A33 Autostrada delle Langhe (Asti‑Cuneo), A36 Pedemontana Lombarda, A59 Tangenziale di Como, A60 Tangenziale di Varese and the Ospitaletto‑Montichiari connector. Plans are under way to add further sections, and similar free‑flow arrangements already exist in Spain’s Basque region and France’s A79 corridor.

The rollout aims to reduce traffic queues, lower fuel consumption and cut emissions, but it also raises concerns for occasional drivers who may miss the electronic payment notices.
