Italy expands prison cultural programs through theater and virtual reality

Cultural and educational initiatives aimed at prison rehabilitation are expanding across Italy through theater, film, and virtual reality. The IN_OUT. Libertà Aumentata project, supported by the Ministry of Culture and promoted by Compagnia Teatrale Petra, is resuming activities in the prisons of Basilicata and Puglia. This program integrates artistic practice with school training, offering virtual reality workshops in prisons such as those in Bari, Brindisi, Trani, and Potenza. These workshops allow inmates to access immersive content, including museum visits and video-dance.

In Assisi, the initiative ‘Occhi & Gabbie’ presented docufilms and readings focused on the experiences within the Spoleto-Maiano prison. Although organizers expressed disappointment that inmates were not authorized to participate in a live theatrical performance, the event successfully utilized cinema and literature to share perspectives from inside the correctional system. One featured docufilm, ‘Lo Cunto dei ristretti’, explores the intersection of prison, schooling, and life after incarceration, highlighting the role of culture and education in the reintegration process.
