Italy extends border controls with Spain and announces new repatriation centers

Italy has extended its border controls on air and sea travel from Spain for an additional 15 days. This decision, announced by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, follows the ongoing migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The move partially suspends the Schengen free movement regime between the two nations and has prompted Spain to implement reciprocal border controls on travelers arriving from Italy until October 8.

In a separate development, Piantedosi announced plans to establish six new repatriation centers (CPR) across various Italian regions, including Campania, Calabria, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, and two in the Trentino-Alto Adige area. The government aims to increase the number of repatriations to 10,000 by the end of 2026. However, these plans face opposition from local administrations and human rights groups.

A report by ActionAid and the University of Bari highlights concerns regarding the effectiveness and cost of the current detention system. The report states that repatriations directly from detention centers fell by 45.1% in 2025 compared to 2022, while the average cost per migrant detained before repatriation rose from 6,455 euros in 2023 to 16,560 euros in 2025.
