Italy expands speed enforcement with new technology and regional checkpoints

Italian road authorities are intensifying speed enforcement efforts through both scheduled operations and new technological deployments.

In the Lazio region, the Polizia Stradale and Astral Infomobilità have released a specific schedule of speed camera locations for the Ferragosto holiday week (August 10–16, 2026). Key monitoring points include the SS 148 Pontina on August 11, the SS 1 Aurelia in Viterbo on August 13, and the SP 277 in Frosinone on August 14. The A24 Roma–Teramo and the A12 Roma–Tarquinia will also see active enforcement on August 15 and 16, respectively.

Separately, the Polizia Stradale and Anas have launched "Vergilius Plus," an advanced average speed detection system. This technology uses automated license plate recognition and vehicle category identification to monitor traffic across 36 road and highway sections, covering approximately 211 km. The system is currently active on several routes, including sections of the A2 Autostrada, SS 1 Aurelia, SS 7 quater Domitiana, SS 309 Romea, and the SS 145 Var Sorrentina.
