Italy experiences cultural shifts and fast-food expansion
Long-term foreign residents in Italy report significant societal shifts, describing a trend toward an “americanized” landscape. Key changes noted include the expansion of international fast-food chains, a rise in the cost of living, increased digitalization of public services, and a shift in tourism patterns that now persists throughout the year rather than being limited to the summer months.
Major international food chains are actively expanding their footprint in the country. McDonald’s, which marks 40 years in Italy in 2026, aims to reach 1,000 restaurants by 2029, with plans to open approximately 60 new units this year. Similarly, KFC intends to open 35 restaurants in 2026, targeting 250 units by 2028 with a focus on Southern Italy and the islands.
While some residents associate the growth of these large networks with the decline of small, independent businesses, other factors such as e-commerce, demographic shifts, and rising operational costs also influence the changing retail landscape.
