Italy explores autonomous mobility and AI-driven road safety
In Italy, new technological proposals and research projects are targeting improvements in regional mobility and road safety.
Augusto Pellegrini, a former councilor from Treia, has proposed a “Città Granne” (Large City) model for the Macerata area. This vision utilizes artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technologies, such as robotaxis and autonomous shuttles, to integrate various administrative centers. The proposal suggests that autonomous transport could reduce costs by up to 70% by 2035, decrease accidents by 80-90%, and better connect the region's complex urban landscape through an integrated network.
Simultaneously, the University of Florence has launched the Aigor project to enhance motorcycle and scooter safety. Led by Professor Giovanni Savino, the initiative uses a “naturalistic study” approach to observe real-world driving behavior without interfering with daily habits. By utilizing onboard sensors and artificial intelligence, the project aims to analyze traffic dynamics in real-time to provide better safety data and support, particularly for new riders.
