Italy explores driving license digitalization and renewal options
Italy is facing discussions regarding the modernization of its Highway Code and the digitalization of driving license processes, driven by EU Directive 2025/2205. Currently, Italian law restricts online theoretical training, a regulation dating back to 1995 that places the country behind nations like France and Germany. Startups such as Guidoio are working to integrate digital platforms for study and document management to improve preparation rates.
For the practical renewal of driving licenses, citizens have several options in Italy. The local health authority (ASL) offers the most economical route through the National Health Service, though it is often subject to long waiting lists. Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) provides a third alternative through its health directorate, offering medical examinations for license validation, conversion, or duplicates. RFI services are open to the general public and can be booked online, often providing more competitive pricing than driving schools or private agencies.
