Italy extends diesel excise tax cut until September 17

The Italian Council of Ministers has approved a one-week extension of the diesel excise tax cut, maintaining a reduction of 17 cents per liter until midnight on Thursday, September 17. This measure aims to mitigate the impact of rising energy prices on families, commuters, and businesses. The decree also extends the tax credit for transport companies to help offset increasing operational costs.

In addition to the immediate tax relief, the government is accelerating work on a new Energy decree to implement more selective support measures. While the current generalized diesel discount is criticized for primarily benefiting wealthier citizens, the administration is considering targeted alternatives. Proposed options include fuel bonuses provided as fringe benefits for employees, though this faces concerns regarding employer advances. Political factions are debating the scope of these measures: the Lega party is advocating for benefits to extend to VAT holders like commercial agents, while Forza Italia is pushing for support specifically for pensioners.

Furthermore, the government has introduced new regulations to accelerate strategic energy sector procedures, including hydrocarbon prospecting and research, to ensure security of supply. This includes the potential appointment of a commissioner to override regional inertia in the authorization process.
