Italy Extends Fuel Tax Cuts Through August

The Italian government approved an extension of its fuel tax relief measures until 31 August. The decree keeps the reduction of excise duties at 10 cents per litre for both gasoline and diesel and maintains the additional 20‑cent‑per‑litre discount for motorists holding a Smac Card.

A follow‑up report shows that the discount has not been fully transmitted to consumers at the pump. Data from the Ministry of Enterprises indicate that about 20 % of fuel stations did not apply the full cut, with some even raising prices. As a result, the average price drop for diesel on self‑service stations is around 11.4 cents per litre – roughly two‑thirds of the intended 17.08‑cent reduction – and the savings on a full 50‑litre fill are smaller than expected. The limited pass‑through is compounded by a recent rise in international oil prices.
