Italy faces 500,000 hospital infections annually

Experts in Rome have highlighted a critical surge in healthcare-associated infections (HAI) in Italy, describing the situation as a ‘silent pandemic’. It is estimated that approximately 500,000 hospital infections occur in the country each year, with one-third caused by antibiotic-resistant ‘superbugs’.

Italy currently holds the European record for both the incidence and mortality rates of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. The country reports at least 11,000 annual deaths due to these pathogens, representing one-third of the total deaths in Europe. Prevalence rates for infections in acute care wards range from 6% to 8%, while intensive care units see rates as high as 20%.

The economic impact on the National Health Service (SSN) is estimated at 783 million euros per year. In response to these figures, Undersecretary of Health Marcello Gemmato emphasized the need for a strategic shift in prevention and security policies, highlighting the importance of the new national implementation plan.
