Italy faces criticism over regional housing law and car‑tax proposals

In Imperia, the local PD chapter condemned the national “Piano Casa” decree – a flagship measure of Matteo Salvini – calling it a “pasticciato” provision that centralises powers in the government and harms regions. The party warned that the law will empty the “fondo affitti” and undermine local efforts to support renters.

In Calabria, Fratelli d'Italia regional councilor Luciana De Francesco rebuked Pasquale Tridico’s proposal to scrap the vehicle tax, saying it shows “una sorprendente ignoranza” of public‑finance rules. She noted the regional car‑tax revenue amounts to roughly €180 million a year and that any abolition would require compensating funds from the national government.

Both politicians stressed that regional authorities cannot unilaterally forego such revenues without a national budgetary framework, highlighting ongoing tensions between Italy’s regions and the central government over fiscal and housing policies.
