Italy faces economic crisis and declining well-being in 2026
The Codacons consumer organization reports that the economic crisis of 2026 has already negated previous improvements in Italian well-being. Rising costs for essential goods, including energy, transport, and food, are significantly reducing household purchasing power, particularly for middle-to-low income families.
Data from Istat highlights a deepening divide between the North-Central regions and the Mezzogiorno. In the South and Islands, specifically in Campania, Puglia, and Calabria, well-being indicators fell below the national average in at least 10 of the 12 domains analyzed.
Environmental factors are also impacting quality of life. Provisional Istat data shows a record 75 days of heatwaves in 2026, a significant increase from previous years. Additionally, regional disparities persist in urban green space availability, with North-Eastern cities offering significantly higher square footage per inhabitant compared to the rest of the country.
