Italy faces ethical debates over AI-driven IVF and reproductive rights

New developments in reproductive technology and legislative proposals in Italy are raising ethical questions regarding assisted fertilization. The “Aura” project has been introduced as the first fully automated in vitro fertilization laboratory. This system utilizes robotics and artificial intelligence to manage various stages of the process, including fertilization and the evaluation of embryos to determine which are suitable for transfer and which are discarded or frozen.

Simultaneously, the Luca Coscioni Association has launched a signature collection to present a popular legislative proposal in the Italian Parliament titled “assisted fertilization for all.” The proposal seeks to expand access to medically assisted procreation techniques to individuals over the age of 18, whether they are in a couple or single. This would extend rights beyond traditional man-woman couples to include single women and same-sex female couples, potentially impacting existing laws regarding gamete donation and surrogacy.
