Italy faces evolving challenges in prison security and rehabilitation

Italian penitentiary systems are facing evolving challenges related to technological innovation and social reintegration. On the security front, the illicit use of drones has emerged as a significant threat, used to smuggle mobile phones, narcotics, money, and other prohibited items into correctional facilities.

Simultaneously, efforts are being made to improve communication and rehabilitation within the prison system. Zeroconfini onlus has launched ‘Un Universo oltre i Confini’, Italy’s first national podcast produced within prisons. The project aims to provide a platform for incarcerated individuals to share their stories, combat social stigma, and highlight the importance of professional training and social reintegration to the public.
