Italy faces evolving religious freedom and education debates

Discussions regarding religious freedom and education are intensifying in Italy. At a conference held at Sapienza University of Rome, experts explored the possibility of transforming religious instruction in schools from a confessional model into a public, intercultural, and interreligious discipline to address religious illiteracy and growing pluralism.

In a separate legal development, a press conference at the Italian Chamber of Deputies addressed a ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. The Court found that Italy's failure to sign an agreement with the Jehovah's Witnesses constitutes discrimination. Advocates emphasized the need to combat misinformation and prejudice regarding the group's status.

Additionally, during a general audience, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the Church's mission in the contemporary world, referencing the Second Vatican Council's Gaudium et Spes. He emphasized the Church's role in addressing deep human questions and resisting the pressures of consumerism and information manipulation.
