Italy faces fishing crisis from invasive crabs and mussel die-offs

Italy's coastal ecosystems and fishing industries are facing severe environmental challenges driven by rising sea temperatures and changing water salinity. In the Fiora River region, a phenomenon known as a ‘salt wedge’ is occurring; due to low rainfall and high heat, seawater is pushing further inland, allowing the invasive blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) to migrate into freshwater areas.

Simultaneously, extreme water temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius have caused a massive die-off of mussels in areas like Comacchio. Fishermen report losses of approximately 90%, particularly affecting the seed mussels intended for future production.

In response to these climate-driven crises, regional authorities in Emilia-Romagna are considering measures to assist mussel farmers. This includes potential adjustments to how compensation and indemnities are calculated to account for the exceptional mortality rates caused by the heatwaves.
