Italy faces legislative conflict over dual patron saint holidays
The Italian Parliament faces a legislative complication regarding the reintroduction of a national holiday for San Francesco d’Assisi. The law, promulgated by President Sergio Mattarella on October 8, 2025, designates October 4 as a national holiday for the patron saint of Italy.
However, this date coincides with the existing civil solemnity for Santa Caterina da Siena. President Mattarella has alerted the presidents of both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate to these critical aspects, noting that the overlap creates a situation not permitted by the current legal framework. Despite the issue being raised nearly a year ago, a legislative resolution remains pending.
