Italy faces local disputes over mosque urban planning and legality

In Italy, local authorities and political figures are addressing the legal status of Islamic places of worship. In Varese, Piero Galparoli of Futuro Nazionale has criticized the local administration for including a mosque in the new Territorial Government Plan (PGT). Galparoli argues that the decision to officialize a mosque in via Giusti is an ideological move that ignores urban planning rules and the rights of local residents to peace and quiet, noting the structure is currently housed in a private residential building.

Meanwhile, in Venice, the municipality has issued closure orders for several unauthorized mosques operating in industrial warehouses and commercial spaces under the guise of cultural centers. Authorities have identified seven such locations between Mestre and Marghera. Three structures, including a large site in an ex-car dealership on via Linghindal, have already received closure orders. The city warned that if these spaces are not restored to their original intended use, the municipality may proceed with direct removal at the owners' expense.
