Italy faces mounting strain from aging population as healthcare extends life

Medical advances have significantly increased life expectancy in Italy, but the longer lives are creating a growing burden on younger families who must care for elderly relatives while juggling work and personal responsibilities. The lack of affordable home‑care services, long waiting lists for nursing homes, and rising costs are turning longevity into a financial and emotional strain for many households.

At the same time, the Italian theatre scene is reflecting on these demographic challenges. The production “Terzo tempo,” based on Lidia Ravera’s novel, is being staged at Milan’s Teatro Franco Parent from 20 May to 7 June. The play uses the metaphor of a rugby “third half” to depict later life as a period for renewed social connection, humor, and collective coping rather than an inevitable decline. It highlights intergenerational solidarity and the search for meaning after retirement, offering a cultural lens on the nation’s aging dilemma.
