Italy faces plastic recycling crisis while Plastic Free marks 7 years of clean‑up actions
Industry bodies Utilitalia and the National Association of Italian Municipalities (Anci) warned that Italy’s plastic recycling chain is in an unprecedented state of criticality, threatening the continuity of municipal waste‑collection services and the EU’s circular‑economy targets. They urged the government to adopt emergency measures such as extra storage capacity, temporary concentration of recycling on facilities with reliable outlets, increased energy‑recovery, and to cover extra costs through the extended‑producer‑responsibility (EPR) system. Longer‑term reforms they propose include stricter customs controls, full enforcement of the SUP directive, a revision of the Plastic Tax, and support for certified recycled plastics and chemical recycling.
The volunteer organisation Plastic Free Onlus celebrated its seventh anniversary. Founded on 29 July 2019 in Termoli by Luca De Gaetano after a beach litter incident, the NGO now counts more than 260,000 volunteers operating in over 40 countries. Since its inception it has organised 10,818 clean‑up events, removed roughly 5,254 t of plastic waste, signed 574 memoranda of understanding with municipalities and recognised 141 towns as “Plastic Free 2026”. Recent activities include a July 26 clean‑up at Lido degli Estensi where 33 volunteers cleared about 550 kg of waste despite heavy rain.
