Italy faces political divides over electoral reform and EU disinformation measures

In Italy, Democratic Party deputy Fabio Porta has criticized a Senate-approved electoral reform regarding the Overseas Constituency. Porta argued that the majority's decision to reject amendments and ignore internal objections weakens the representation and rights of Italians living abroad, characterizing the move as a way to limit the political connection between Italy and its global communities.

Separately, the European Parliament approved a report to establish a 'center of excellence' to combat fake news and foreign interference, explicitly identifying Russia as the 'principal external threat' to European democracy. The vote revealed political divisions among Italian parties: Fratelli d'Italia, Lega, and the Vannacci party voted against the measure, while Forza Italia and the Democratic Party voted in favor. The Five Star Movement voted against, and Sinistra Italiana abstained.
