Italy faces political friction in Frosinone and national coalition talks
Political tensions are rising in Italy at both the municipal and national levels. In Frosinone, Mayor Riccardo Mastrangeli has issued an ultimatum to local party leaders, demanding the appointment of a new City Council President by Friday. Failure to reach an agreement could result in his immediate resignation, potentially triggering early elections in May.
At the national level, the center-left coalition is debating the structure of upcoming primaries. M5S leader Giuseppe Conte is advocating for coalition-wide primaries to select a premier candidate, suggesting they take place between late 2026 and early 2027. Conversely, PD Secretary Elly Schlein has rejected the idea of an external ‘federator’ figure, favoring either direct primary votes or the recognition of the largest party. While leaders aim to build a unified program, disagreements persist regarding the timing and the inclusion of centrist forces.
