Italy faces private health‑care staffing crisis and nationalisation debate

A proposal to nationalise private health‑care facilities in Italy has resurfaced, arguing that the state could take over privately run clinics that contract with the National Health Service. The constitution allows expropriation for public utility, but the only historic instance was the 1962 nationalisation of the electricity sector. Health Minister Orazio Schillaci's recent reform bill seeks to strengthen territorial assistance and update hospital organisation without overturning the existing accreditation model.

Meanwhile, the trade union NurSind Pisa has warned that acute staff shortages at the Auxilium Vitae rehabilitation centre in Volterra are endangering both patients and workers. The union describes “la carenza di personale mette a rischio lavoratori e assistenza”, citing ratios as low as two nurses for 40 neuro‑unit patients and one nurse plus one OSS for 20 cardiac patients. It calls on the regional health authority and the majority shareholder, Azienda Sanitaria Toscana Nord Ovest, to intervene and improve working conditions.
