Italy's agricultural sector faces crisis from climate and costs

The Italian agricultural sector is facing a severe crisis driven by a combination of extreme heat, drought, rising energy costs, and geopolitical tensions. This has led to visible shortages of fresh produce and 'fourth gamma' products—such as bagged salads and spinach—in supermarkets, particularly across central and northern Italy.

Agricultural organizations, including Confcooperative and CIA Campania, report that heatwaves have caused significant crop damage, with field-grown lettuce experiencing losses of up to 40% and overall production waste reaching 20% to 30% in some sectors. These climatic issues are compounded by the high cost of fuel, energy, and fertilizers, which are squeezing farmer incomes and threatening food security.

In response to rising production costs, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture has activated over 136 million euros in support. This fund consists of 45 million euros from the European Agricultural Reserve and 91 million euros from national resources, aimed at compensating farmers for the increased cost of fertilizers. Additionally, the government has highlighted a total of 15.5 billion euros allocated to the agricultural sector over the past four years to support various initiatives, including generational turnover and food sovereignty.
