Italy faces regional environmental and water management challenges

In Italy, regional concerns are rising regarding environmental management and resource scarcity. In Pasquasia, a debate has emerged over the remediation of the local mine. While €17 million has been allocated for securing the site and creating a cell for existing asbestos, local officials have expressed concern that the project could evolve into a regional hub for storing asbestos waste from other Sicilian provinces.

Simultaneously, the Piacenza region is facing a severe water crisis due to the 2026 summer drought. Water levels in the Mignano and Molato dams have reached minimum capacity, and the flow of the Po River is significantly below seasonal norms. Confagricoltura Piacenza is calling for regulatory changes to allow for accelerated procedures regarding irrigation well concessions, arguing that current bureaucratic timelines are incompatible with the urgent needs of the agricultural sector during a declared water crisis.
