Italy faces regional gaps in cancer screening participation

In Italy, national cancer screening participation rates show significant regional disparities. While the National Health Service invited 17.7 million people for free preventive exams in 2025, only 7.5 million—roughly 42%—attended. Although experts note an encouraging upward trend in participation, coverage remains insufficient, particularly in southern regions.

The standard guaranteed screenings include mammographies for women aged 50–69, HPV or Pap tests for women aged 25–64, and fecal occult blood tests for men and women aged 50–69. These services are managed by regional health authorities and monitored by the National Screening Observatory.

To address accessibility, the Asp di Palermo is launching a mobile initiative titled ‘Le vie della prevenzione’ (The Ways of Prevention). Starting in Campofelice di Fitalia, mobile clinics will provide free services directly in public squares. These services include oncological screenings, cardiovascular checks, diabetes testing, and vaccinations. The initiative also offers pediatric visual and speech screenings, as well as veterinary services such as microchipping and leishmaniasis screening.
