Italy faces rise in telephone scams targeting energy and telephony services
Consumers in Italy are facing an increase in sophisticated telephone scams targeting energy, gas, and fixed telephony services. Fraudulent operators use various manipulative tactics, such as the “voice recording trap,” where they trick users into saying “yes” to simulate consent for unauthorized contracts. Other methods include creating false urgency regarding service disconnections, impersonating trusted providers or regulatory authorities, and offering deceptive discounts without transparent cost breakdowns.
In response to these aggressive telemarketing and fraudulent practices, technical solutions are being developed to filter unwanted calls. One approach involves building an automated telephone assistant using open-source components like Asterisk for call management and Whisper for Italian speech transcription. This system can distinguish between useful contacts and commercial calls, providing automated warnings for energy or gas solicitations and notifying users via Telegram with call transcriptions and classifications.
